After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene
and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it… then the angel said to the woman, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified…He has been raised
just as he said.” -Matthew 28, 1-2, 5-6
From the middle ages a tradition has counted the appearance of the Risen Lord to his Mother among the seven joys of our blessed Lady, and who can doubt that she, who bore him and stood under his cross should not be granted the supreme joy of beholding him, risen and victorious over our sin and death?
Here, accompanying St. Mary Magdalene is our Lady, kneeling in joyful awe at the sight of her Son, risen from the grave. Death, as St. Paul would write, has no more power over him.
